"The conquest of Guatemala was brutal, prolonged and complex, charged with intrigue, deception, confusion, disconcerting and intimidating. And nothing definite, however, continues to be perceived as a confrontation whose interests were evident and whose results were decisive, especially in favor of the Spaniards. The objective of "terrorizing the earth" is to make a critical reassessment of the drama, which requires us to re-examine the events and circumstances in light not only of new findings but of a deeper awareness of the roles played by indigenous peoples, especially kaqchikeles. Their resistance, transformed from allies into enemies by the actions of Pedro de Alvarado (1485-1541) in the first months of the invasion, has never been sufficiently represented and integrated into the narrative.
